Vitamin D deficiency may up risk of heart disease | Sify Health

Low levels of vitamin D are associated with a markedly higher risk of heart attack and early death, according to a new research.

The study involved more than 10,000 Danes and was conducted by the University of Copenhagen and Copenhagen University Hospital.

Vitamin D deficiency has traditionally been linked with poor bone health. However, the results from several population studies indicate that a low level of this important vitamin may also be linked to a higher risk of ischemic heart disease, a designation that covers heart attack, coronary arteriosclerosis and angina. Other studies show that vitamin D deficiency may increase blood pressure, and it is well known that high blood pressure increases the risk of heart attack.

?We have now examined the association between a low level of vitamin D and ischemic heart disease and death in the largest study to date. We observed that low levels of vitamin D compared to optimal levels are linked to 40 percent higher risk of ischemic heart disease, 64 percent higher risk of heart attack, 57 percent higher risk of early death, and to no less than 81 percent higher risk of death from heart disease,? said Dr. Peter Brondum-Jacobsen, Clinical Biochemical Department, Copenhagen University Hospital.

Top heart healthy foods

The higher risks are visible, even after adjustment for several factors that can influence the level of vitamin D and the risk of disease and death. This is one of the methods scientists use to avoid bias.

The population study that forms the basis for this scientific investigation is the Copenhagen City Heart Study, where levels of vitamin D were measured in blood samples from 1981-1983. Participants were then followed in the nationwide Danish registries up to the present.

?With this type of population study, we are unable to say anything definitive about a possible causal relationship. But we can ascertain that there is a strong statistical correlation between a low level of vitamin D and high risk of heart disease and early death,? said Borge Nordestgaard, clinical professor at the Faculty of Health and Medical Sciences, University of Copenhagen and senior physician at Copenhagen University Hospital..

The explanation may be that a low level of vitamin D directly leads to heart disease and death. However, it is also possible that vitamin deficiency is a marker for poor health generally,? he added.

Signs and symptoms of a heart attack

The scientists are now working to determine whether the connection between a low level of vitamin D and the risk of heart disease is a genuine causal relationship.

The study has been published in the well-reputed American journal Arteriosclerosis, Thrombosis and Vascular Biology.

Tennis Elbow Exercises ? Regain Full Use of Your Arm

Tennis elbow exercises are widely acknowledged to be the best way of getting relief from this very painful condition. If you use your arm to do certain repetitive movements then your elbow is certain to get inflamed. This will result in a great deal of soreness and pain on the area of the upper arm near the elbow. Interestingly, while tennis elbow is a common condition affecting tennis players, it can also affect cooks, construction workers and even office workers who have to make repetitive movements with the tools of their trade.

One way of dealing with this problem is avoiding the activity that causes it. However, this is not always possible since people?s livelihoods are connected with it. A doctor might suggest treatment by a physiotherapist or even the use of a special brace to hold the arm in place. In extreme cases a doctor might even prescribe injections of cortisone to help control the inflammation. The problem is that these methods cost a lot of money. If they don?t work you might even have to go in for surgery.

You?ll be able to get your arm in good condition without having to spend a lot of money if you do the right tennis elbow exercises instead. These exercises are surprisingly easy to do and you will be able to get your elbow in good condition within a reasonably short time.

- Wrist extensions: Get a firm grip on a weight whilst supporting your forearm on a table or bench. Hold the weight with your palm facing downwards. Move your wrists upwards and downwards. This exercise will strengthen the wrist as well as the muscles of the forearm.

- Forearm extensions 2: Once more hold a weight in your hand whilst supporting your forearm on a table. Hold the weight with the palm facing downwards. Curl your wrist and bring the weight towards you.

- Elbow stretching exercises: Try and extend the elbow as much as possible without stretching the arm unduly. Gradually increase the degree by which the arm can be stretched.

Be very careful when doing these tennis elbow exercises or else you might inadvertently hurt your arm more. Do not use very heavy weights when doing these exercises and make sure that you stop exercising as soon as you feel any sort of discomfort. Regular exercise will increase the flexibility and strength of your elbow and ensure that no additional problems ensue.

Find out how you can strengthen your arms including your elbows with the help of the right tennis elbow exercises. Do these exercises regularly in order to cure inflammation of your elbow and prevent further painful problems.

Trader Vic?s is a family of restaurants, united by our four cornerstones: Decor, Food, Drinks, and Service. Its located in Phoenix mall, Whitefield, Bangalore. We food bloggers were invited for a Bloggers's round table.

?

Their ?menu showcases the best of cuisines from around the world including Chinese, Japanese, Polynesian, Vietnamese, Thai, French, and Californian.?They strive for authentic preparations and every Trader Vic?s location features world-famous Chinese wood-fired oven.

About the Trader!

Victor J. "Trader Vic" Bergeron packed more excitement, enjoyment and exotica into his 82 years than any other man. Victor Bergeron first began mixing drinks in 1934 in his Oakland saloon called Hinky Dinks, he embarked on his first South Seas adventure and completely immersed himself in island living and culture.

?

In 1936 Victor Bergeron became popularly known as Trader Vic. He transformed Hinky Dinks from a saloon into a tropical retreat with artifacts he collected on his extensive travels. The Trader then began to put into practice his research on rums and served simmering plates of Island-style cuisine and quickly became the first fusion restaurant concept.

The Decor and ambiance is awesome with lots and lots of Tiki sculptures all around us which gives a tropical environment feeling. These Tikis are from Hawaii.

Tiki artwork, sculptures, and the totem-pole style carvings are from all over the Pacific and Pacific Rim - island nations, native cultures, and rare tribes express their connection with magic, gods, and forces of nature. You'll see different styles of Tiki art and sculpture, depending on it's origin. Our tikis are hand carved from coco palms with attention to detail. Turn your home and business into a tropical paradise with our tikis.

I loved this outdoor decor which is a very nice place to hangout with friends!
Trader Vic?s today is famous for this custom-made wood-fired Chinese Oven which can be traced back over two thousand years to the Han Dynasty. Each new restaurant has a room dedicated to these special hand-made ovens. This ancient method of cooking is today being recommended by the American Heart Association.
Today, Trader Vic?s restaurants across the globe seamlessly integrate the treasured traditions of the heady first days with inventive and contemporary cuisine and cocktails, a formula for success that the Trader himself would be proud of. Take the tropical plunge and become a part of the rich and timeless history of Trader Vic?s.

What You Have Always Wondered About ... - Family Farm and Home

Grow healthy and delicious food at home, right outside your door. There?s nothing quite like going outside and grabbing some toppings for your salad, or better yet the whole salad. This article will give you some great horticulture tips to help you make the most of your garden.

To draw good insects to your garden, plant heather. Heather will attract bees early in the spring as well as other beneficial insects. Heather beds are also attractive to bugs such as spiders and ground beetles that will kill pests. Protect yourself from being surprised by these bugs by donning gardening gloves before disturbing your heather beds.

Consider planting evergreens in your garden that produce berries. This will allow your garden to have color, even in the dreary winter months. Some evergreens that will add life to your yard in the wintertime are the American Cranberrybush, Common Snowberry, Winterberry, and American holly.

Get the most out of what you have, and your property. One of the best things you can do to increase property value is to have proper landscaping. There are some varieties of plants that increase property values by over 20%. Seek out plants and shrubbery that require limited maintenance and will adapt well to the natural climate that you live in.

Healthy soil will also assist in your battle against pests. Healthier plants are stronger, which in turn can help the plants you grow to become more resistant to disease and bugs that can harm them. If you start with balanced soil, your garden will produce healthy plants with the best yield. Refrain from using chemicals since these will increase the salt content of the soil.

Bring some plants into your home to protect them against winter weather. Perhaps save the most resistant or expensive plants. Use caution when digging around the roots of your plant. You need to keep the root structure intact for it to thrive after being potted.

Place plant materials in big plastic trash bags, so that you can build layers of this material for use in your compost pile. Fall is a prime season for doing this, especially after your leaves have all been raked. Put the leaves that are bagged somewhere warm. In the spring, this will be the ideal material to include in your compost pile.

Keep in mind what vegetables you prefer, as well as the ones used most in your home and plant your garden around this consensus. This will assist you in decreasing the monthly bill for food, and get the most value out of your space for horticulture. Don?t bother wasting time on growing foods that your family won?t even eat!

If you would love to have access to fresh and healthy mint leaves from your own back yard, but dread the way the plant spreads so quickly, worry not. You should plant the mint in a rather large garden container or pot instead so you can monitor growth. Bury the container so that your plant does not stand out. The container will keep the roots from spreading too far.

Chicken tractors are great for fertilizing your prospective garden area. When it comes to a chicken tractor, it is basically a chicken coop that is moveable with a sheltered area and an open floor. This will allow chickens to eat the vegetation and the bugs, and deposit fertilizer at the same time. After fertilizing one spot, the tractor is moved to another.

Plant a little catnip or wheatgrass in the area surrounding the plants that your cat is devouring. Try putting mothballs or citrus on your soil to wards pets away.

Use a wheelbarrow and a kneeling stool when you?re working in your garden. Horticulture can be very tough on the knees as you spend much time leaning near the ground, so a portable stool can make all the difference to your comfort. Also having a garden usually requires moving heavy dirt and objects, so investing in a wheelbarrow is a very sound investment.

As previously stated, gardening is a fantastic way of growing veggies in your backyard. When you can include the fruits of your labor in your meals, you?ll be proud and satisfied. Apply the tips from this article to make the most of your horticulture experience.

Breast cancer gets genetic profile

Data may help improve treatment

Web edition : Tuesday, September 25th, 2012

One of the most complete portraits of breast cancer yet painted may inspire some new treatment options.

Doctors and researchers have long classified breast cancer into four different types. But those sketches contain information about only one aspect of tumors and do not show all facets of the cancer?s molecular personality, including mutations, protein production and levels of genetic activity. Now, an international consortium of researchers known as the Cancer Genome Atlas Network has combined many different types of data to fill in the picture, including the mutations that probably sparked tumor formation in the first place. The molecular portraits were published online September 23 in Nature.

Breast cancers are usually categorized by which genes are highly active. Tumors with an overactive estrogen receptor gene are known as ER-positive and fall into two groups: the easier-to-treat luminal A group and a more aggressive luminal B group. Another category is based on the activity of the HER2 gene.

The fourth category, basal-like tumors, sometimes called triple-negative tumors, is different from the rest. This type of breast cancer is aggressive, tends to strike younger women, African-Americans and women with a family history of the disease. It is also associated with mutations in the BRCA1 gene, which are associated with a greatly increased risk of breast cancer.

Knowing a tumor?s category has helped doctors advise patients about treatments, but ?hasn?t offered information about the underlying cause of the disease, says Matthew Ellis, an oncologist and molecular biologist at Washington University School of Medicine in St. Louis. Ellis was one of hundreds of coauthors of the paper.

Information from the new study shows that basal-like breast cancer strongly resembles a type of ovarian tumor called serous ovarian cancer.

?This is what we hoped to find,? says Philip Bernard, a genomics researcher at Huntsman Cancer Institute at the University of Utah, who was not involved in the study. ?It was expected?but it still needed to be confirmed.?

So women with these basal-like tumors may benefit from chemotherapy regimens like those given to patients with ovarian cancer, Ellis says. He expects fierce debate and probably some clinical trials to test that conclusion.

In the three other types of breast cancer, a series of biochemical reactions known as the PI3 kinase pathway is overstimulated because of mutations in genes involved at different steps of the process. Some drugs that target specific mutations in genes involved in the PI3 kinase pathway are already being tested against other types of cancer and might be appropriate for some women with breast cancer, the study results suggest.

Ellis professes to worrying that ?chaos will ensue unless we get ourselves organized? and decide how best to test drugs developed for other types of cancer in patients with breast cancer. Insurance companies generally will not pay for such off-label use of cancer drugs.

The new study also uncovered new mutations not previously associated with breast cancer. Drugs might be developed to combat some of those newly discovered molecular changes, Ellis says.

Ex-Murdoch editor Brooks due in court on hacking plot charges

LONDON (Reuters) - Rebekah Brooks, a former executive in Rupert Murdoch's media empire and friend of British Prime Minister David Cameron, faces charges in court on Wednesday that she conspired to hide evidence from police investigating a phone hacking scandal.

The charges are part of the criminal inquiry into assertions that UK newspapers intercepted messages on the phones of celebrities, politicians and crime victims, and made illegal payments to public officials.

The scandal has damaged the reputation of Murdoch's global media operations, raised questions about Cameron's judgment and exposed the close relations between British politicians, police and journalists.

Brooks, 44, was expected to enter a plea on three counts of conspiracy to pervert the course of justice between July 6 and July 19, 2011. The hearing will take place at the Central Criminal Court in London.

The Crown Prosecution Service said the first charge alleges she conspired with her husband Charlie Brooks, a racehorse trainer, to "conceal material from the officers of the Metropolitan Police Service" in London.

The second accuses Brooks and Cheryl Carter, her one-time personal assistant, of plotting "to remove seven boxes of material from the archive of News International", Murdoch's UK newspaper business.

The third alleges that Brooks, her husband and three others conspired "to conceal documents, computers and other electronic equipment from officers".

Cameron's ex-media chief Andy Coulson, who also worked as a Murdoch newspaper editor, is due in the same court for a preliminary hearing on charges that he conspired to intercept phone messages.

Brooks is separately charged with conspiracy to intercept phone messages, allegations she has denied. Wednesday's hearing will encompass both the charges of conspiracy to pervert the course of justice and those related to phone messages.

Brooks was one of Murdoch's most trusted and loyal managers, editing two of his top-selling tabloid newspapers before going on to run News International. She was also close to Cameron, exchanging text messages with the Conservative leader. (Reporting by Peter Griffiths; Editing by Mark Heinrich)

PFT's Morning After: Amazing Sunday, except for refs

PFT's Morning After: My choice for the best game of the day was that insane finish in Tennessee, where the Lions came back from 14 points down with 18 seconds remaining to send the game into overtime, only to end up losing 44-41. But the Chiefs-Saints battle was also lots of fun, and every time I looked at the Bengals? 38-31 win over the Redskins I saw one of the league?s bright young stars (either Cincinnati?s A.J. Green or Washington?s Robert Griffin III) making a big play. There was no shortage of greatness on display on Sunday.

The Story Of An Internet Troll With A Surprising Twist

DarknessYou get a thick skin when messing around on the Internet, and that can go either way. You can react, like a nerve burned raw, or you can become a troll. This is a story of both. I'll paraphrase the story here, but go and read it yourself. It's quite short and very concise. It shows a man's descent into fear and his eventual recovery and uncovers part of the Internet that, in a word, horrifies me.

Suicide bomber in Afghan capital kills at least 9

KABUL, Afghanistan (AP) ? A suicide bomber rammed a small sedan heavily laden with explosives into a mini-bus believed to be carrying foreign aviation workers to the airport in the Afghan capital early Tuesday, killing at least nine people.

Kabul police chief Gen. Mohammad Ayub Salangi said the large explosion took place on an avenue northwest of the city center near Kabul International Airport. The blast, which went off in front a gas station, was so powerful it hurled the mini-bus at least 50 meters (yards).

The criminal director for the Kabul police department, Mohammad Zahir, said at least seven or eight men that were believed to be foreign nationals working for an aviation company at the airport died in the blast. The discrepancy in the death toll was attributed to the damage cause by the blast. He said their Afghan driver was also killed.

An AP reporter at the scene of the blast aw at least six bodies next to the destroyed mini-bus.

No one claimed immediate responsibility for the attack, but there were fears that it could have been carried out in reprisal for an anti-Islam film that ridicules the Prophet Muhammad. The Taliban have threatened to increase their attacks against foreign targets to avenge the film. Other insurgent groups are also active in Afghanistan.

It came one day after hundreds of Afghans burned cars and threw rocks at a U.S. military base in the capital as a demonstration against the film turned violent. One police vehicle was burned by the mob before they finally dispersed around midday Monday.

An eyewitness at the scene said he was waiting for a bus to go to work at 6:45 a.m. when he saw a small white sedan ram into the mini-bus.

"The explosion was so powerful and loud that I could not hear anything for 10 minutes," said Abdullah Shah, a teacher waiting at a bus stop. "It was early and there wasn't much traffic or there would have been many dead."

Teenager wins a seat in Uganda's parliament

KAMPALA, Uganda (AP) ? A teenaged young woman fresh out of high school has won a seat in Uganda's parliament, adding to the ruling party's majority but embarrassing some who say her success lowers expectations of lawmakers in the East African country.

Proscovia Oromait, who is 19 and a college hopeful, contested elections deep in eastern Uganda to fill the seat left vacant by her father's death. President Yoweri Museveni's ruling party had been desperate for a win there, having lost seven in eight parliamentary by-elections this year. The polls have come to be widely seen as a test of Museveni's popularity, and some party bosses calculated that she would win with a sympathy vote. The result was Uganda's youngest lawmaker ever ? and a boost for Museveni's party.

Michael Mukula, a lawmaker who is one of the ruling party's deputy chairmen, said Oromait's win had sent "a lot of ripples" through the organization, dividing it into reformers and hardliners who want to win by any means necessary.

"I am a bit concerned and taken aback because of her lack of experience and lack of exposure," Mukula said of Oromait. "This is not a constituency you want to give a child of that age to shoulder."

Oromait will represent a place called Usuk, where dirt roads become flooded in the rainy season and where there is only one functional high school. This rural constituency of some 100,000 people is said to be thoroughly impoverished, even by Uganda's standards. But last week it was thrust firmly into the national limelight, the latest battleground in the ruling party's quest to claim a reassuring win and silence critics who say Museveni's popularity is starting to fade. Museveni, who took power by force in 1986, has not said if he will run again in 2016, when his current term expires, but he faces growing opposition within and outside his party to step down and preside over the first peaceful transfer of power in Uganda's history. Some opponents suspect he may be grooming his son or wife to take over when he retires.

In choosing Oromait, some say, the ruling party was simply trying to stay afloat at a time of rising political activism against the Museveni regime, which has been criticized by rights groups as too eager to use violence to retain power.

"She is a victim of these circumstances," said Nicholas Opio, a Kampala-based political analyst, referring to the ruling party's eagerness to win after a string of losses. "I don't think she was prepared for this. She had even never voted."

However, according to Opio, Oromait "will be at home in the House in the sense that not much is required of her."

Museveni's party has an overwhelming parliamentary majority, a fact that contributes to the sense of contempt some Ugandans feel for legislators. In 2005, with Museveni facing a stiff challenge from a former insider, lawmakers agreed to remove presidential term limits from the constitution, a process condemned by opposition activists and Western diplomats as a backward step for Uganda's young democracy. Many lawmakers have become notorious for avoiding plenary debates, with the speaker recently threatening to punish those who deliberately choose to stay away.

Barnabas Tinkasiimire, a lawmaker with the ruling party who has the reputation of a nonconformist, said the election of Oromait is an embarrassment to Uganda. "When you analyze that baby," Tinkasiimire said, referring to the teenage lawmaker, "what kind of knowledge and experience does she have? This is unbelievable."

Oromait comes across as vaguely confident in interviews, recently telling reporters: "It's not about the age ... it's the brain."

Mwambutsya Ndebesa, a professor of political history at Uganda's Makerere University, said she could turn out to be a much more inspirational figure than some of her older counterparts.

"She may not have any ideas yet," said Ndebesa, "but she has the ability to learn."

11 killed in 2011 crash at Reno air races honored

(AP) ? Spectators and racers paid tribute Sunday to 11 people who were killed when a plane crashed into box seats at last year's Reno National Championship Air Races.

A moment of silence was held on the anniversary of the horrific accident at Reno-Stead Airport for pilot Jimmy Leeward and 10 victims on the ground.

The emotional ceremony before a crowd of tens of thousands also featured the release of white balloons and a flag presentation after each victim's name was read.

"Today is dedicated to paying tribute to all of those so greatly affected by the cold, unsympathetic and somber hands of fate ... and to memorializing those 11 members of our air race family who are no longer with us today ," said Mike Houghton, president of the Reno Air Racing Association.

Among injured victims in attendance were members of a Kansas family. The crash killed 73-year-old Cherie Elvin, of Lenexa, Kan., while her husband, Chuck, sons Brian and Bill, and daughter-in-law Linda Elvin lost part of their legs.

Bill Elvin told the Reno Gazette-Journal that his heart was racing Friday as he watched a plane come around the final pylon closest to the box seats, but slowly began to relax. Like other members of his family, he's an aviation fan who thinks organizers have made the air races as safe as possible.

"How do you protect people from catastrophic events?" he told the newspaper. "They happen because we are human. If we were perfect, no accidents would happen ... But that's not how life is. We have to accept that's how life is."

Leeward's World War II-era P-51 Mustang fighter reached 530 mph before it pitched skyward and then slammed nose-first into the box seats fronting the grandstand, killing him and 10 others. Seventy others were injured.

Federal investigators last month blamed Leeward, 74, of Ocala, Fla., and his aircraft modifications for the crash. A crucial tail control known as the trim tab fluttered, its screws loosening.

The crash prompted the implementation of new safety measures, including a redesigned race course that adds 150 feet of buffer ? pushing the distance between racing planes and the permanent grandstand to at least 1,000 feet.

Also honored Sunday at the air races was Neil Armstrong, the first man to walk on the moon.

Members of the National Aviation Heritage Invitational announced a trophy awarded to the best vintage aircraft restored to airworthy condition would be renamed after Armstrong.

Armstrong, who died last month in Ohio at age 82, walked on the moon in July 1969.

Among aviation pioneers who paid tribute to Armstrong were Southwest Airlines founder Herb Kelleher and record-setter Dick Rutan.

The weeklong air races conclude with the finals Sunday. It's the only event of its kind in the world, sometimes with wingtip-to-wingtip racing 100 feet off the ground in six classes of aircraft.

Ellen DeGeneres?is extending her relationship with a producer on "The Ellen DeGeneres Show."

NBC has given a script order to an untitled single-camera comedy from Lauren Pomerantz centering on a proudly independent 32-year-old single woman.

STORY: The booming business of Ellen DeGeneres

Pomerantz, who serves as a writer and producer on the Telepictures' syndicated "Ellen," will write and executive produce. DeGeneres, through her A Very Good Production shingle, also will serve as an executive producer on the Warner Bros. Television comedy.

The effort centers on a successful woman who notices that she's listed as a "single woman" on the paperwork for the house she's about to close on and becomes convinced that she just doomed herself to die alone. As a result, she turns to her friends, family and a therapist to convince her she didn't make a huge mistake.

PHOTOS: A day in the life of Ellen DeGeneres

The Pomerantz project marks the latest sale this development season for DeGeneres' banner. The company also sold a comedy based on the web series "Couple Time" to Fox.

DeGeneres this week kicked off the 10th season of her syndicated talk show to its best ratings since 2003.

Pomerantz, whose credits also include "Community" and "Saturday Night Live," is repped by UTA and Mosaic.

Chicago teachers fear wave of school closings after strike

CHICAGO (Reuters) - Striking Chicago teachers fear that once they approve a new contract with the school district and end their strike, Mayor Rahm Emanuel will go ahead with dozens of school closings because of falling enrollment and poor academic performance.

The closing of schools and what happens to the teachers working in them has been a major issue in the bitter dispute, even though the disagreement over evaluating teachers based on standardized test results of their students has received more attention.

Urban school districts around the country are grappling with closing schools, including Philadelphia, Milwaukee, Kansas City, Detroit, Pittsburgh, and Washington, according to a study last year on school closings by the Pew Charitable Trust.

"If they fire us, we're done," said Rhonda McLeod, a special education teacher at Gresham Elementary and one of the union delegates expected to vote on Sunday whether to end the strike. "We're terrified. We don't need to be dumped to the wayside. We're not trash, we're teachers."

Union and school officials said on Friday that they had reached a tentative agreement that could end the five-day strike and clear the way for classes to resume on Monday in the third-largest U.S. school district.

The union has set a meeting on Sunday of some 800 representatives from around the city to vote on whether to end the strike and allow more than 350,000 Chicago students to go back to school. Negotiators were putting the finishing touches on that agreement on Saturday.

FALLING ENROLLMENT

Enrollment in Chicago Public Schools has fallen nearly 20 percent in the last decade, according to the Pew study, mainly because of population declines in disadvantaged neighborhoods.

According to the union, 86 public schools in Chicago have closed in the past decade. Many have been replaced by charter or "contract" schools run by philanthropists, and charter schools now account for 12 percent of students, district figures show.

The Chicago Tribune reported this week that school district officials are considering closing up to 120 schools next year, which would be 17 percent of all schools in the district. Asked about this on Wednesday, Emanuel said it was too early to say.

Charter schools are publicly funded but non-union, and the teachers union has complained that they undermine public education and force more community schools to close. Their academic performance record compared with community schools is mixed, according to national studies.

But a powerful U.S. education movement is pushing charter schools. Reformers such as Emanuel and U.S. Education Secretary Arne Duncan, a former Chicago schools chief, argue that schools performing poorly in academics should either be closed permanently, reopened with new principals and teachers, or converted to charter schools run by non-union personnel.

The union has fought for so-called "recall rights" giving teachers who have been laid off because their school closed priority in being rehired at another school.

Emanuel has said he wants principals to hire any teacher they want, not according to seniority or recall rights.

"I think it should be left up to the principal, locally," Emanuel told reporters on Wednesday.

"ON PROBATION"

An example of this conflict is Gresham Elementary school, where McLeod works on the South Side of Chicago.

Some 90.8 percent of the 325 pre-kindergarten through eighth grade students who attend Gresham are classified as low income, according to the school district.

The student population is 98.8 percent African-American, the district says, and the neighborhood is one that has been hit by a wave of gang-related murders this summer, drawing national attention.

There have been 366 murders in Chicago through the beginning of September, up 30 percent from a year ago, mainly due to gang violence, police figures show. Thirty-one of those deaths have been in the neighborhood where Gresham Elementary school is located, up 19 percent from last year. Over the last two years 23 children ages 10 or younger have been killed in the Chicago crossfire, some of them while walking to or from school.

McLeod said gunfire could sometimes be heard near the school.

Gresham elementary has been rated "on probation" by the school district for the last four academic years because its students have performed poorly on the Illinois Standards Achievement Test (ISAT), which measures students on reading, math and science.

While the school's academics have improved some, probation means that if the school does not improve further it could have its principal removed, the school closed and students transferred, or the school closed and reopened with new staff.

The teachers union argues that they are working in exceptionally challenging conditions of poverty and crime and that this affects the ability of their students to learn.

McLeod said principals sometimes were pushed by bosses to hire new teachers who may not work out in rough neighborhoods.

"Over the years, I've seen a lot of teachers come in and go running out the door," said McLeod, a 15-year veteran of Chicago Public Schools who has a masters degree and teaches a college special education course.

Teachers and parents have also expressed worry that school closings can make life more dangerous for students, forcing them across gang lines into other neighborhoods and increasing the possibility of violence.

The beating death in 2009 of 16-year-old high school student Derrion Albert, captured on a cell phone video and seen around the world, has been blamed by activists in part on conflicts arising from school closings.

Maintaining Your Health with Exercise | fitness coach shirley

- By guest blogger, Jim

Few investments improve a person?s health as much as the investment of time spent exercising. According to the Mayo Clinic, exercise helps control weight, improves mood and increases energy levels with no dangerous side effects. People who exercise have a lower risk of many medical conditions including heart disease and high blood pressure compared to those that live a more sedentary life style. The major choice for many people is determining the best form of exercise.

Hitting the Gym

Many people choose to spend time at a commercial facility equipped with the latest in exercise equipment. These gyms often feature treadmills, exercise bikes, weights and ellipticals not available anywhere else. Commercial gyms commonly charge a fee that might not be affordable to all people. The gym experience can be social offering a chance to exercise with friends and coworkers.

Home Workouts

Nothing beats the convenience of exercising at home. Home gym equipment offers many of the same features as found on commercial gym equipment although most are built for lighter duty and would not stand up to the repeated use cycles of a commercial gym. Check classified ads and second hand stores for used exercise equipment. Try to find the best equipment that fits your budget.

Hit the Road

Not all exercise programs require a gym membership or home equipment. Running or walking both burn calories and offer all the benefits of any other exercise program. Incorporate walking into everyday activities like commuting to work or shopping during the lunch hour. Walking, rather than driving, produces the same health benefits of any other form of exercise without the cost of a gym membership or equipment. Adding ankle or wrist weights increases the benefit.

Keeping it Clean

Keep fit by keeping the house clean. Put some music on, something upbeat, and move vigorously from task to task around the home. It keeps the house in order and offers health benefits. Adding ankle and wrist weights improves the health aspects of the housecleaning workout. The housecleaning workout has one disadvantage. Workouts should increase in intensity over time. Unless you plan on cleaning the neighbor?s home this usually isn?t possible.

Sports

Sports provide the exercise of a workout disguised as a competition. Look for a sport that holds your interest and provides the right level of intensity. For example, someone starting to workout might find a triathlon to intense. Look for recreational leagues in your community and find a team that you would enjoy being around. In many cases, participation in a sport encourages other forms of exercise in order to increase abilities for the competition.

Make sure you are healthy before beginning any new exercise activity. Start slow and build intensity as the workouts progress. The old adage ?no pain, no gain,? is best ignored. Some stiffness and soreness is always expected but sharp pains are the body?s way of telling you that something is wrong. Seek medical attention for any potential injury.

Avril Lavigne Pregnant?

Hot on the heels of her engagement come the rumors that Avril Lavigne is preggers. Adding fuel to the fire of that rumor are some photos of the singer with what appears to be a little baby bump. Could it be that Avril is going to be a mom? The Daily Mail has pics of Lavigne that show her with what could be mistaken for a baby bump, think Megan Fox when she first looked pregnant. The? numerous shots are of her with her fiance’ Chad Kroeger in Paris in a very casual outfit that is meant to be covering what appears to be something. I have looked at the pics a few times and I would say it sure does look like she is with child. However as we all know just because a famous lady has a little pouch doesn’t necessarily mean that a baby is on the way and no that is not my way of saying someone is fat either. Anyway recently while in New York at Fashion Week for her clothing line Abbey Dawn, Avril dodged question about whether or not she was knocked up. That is right now confirm or denial which kind of [...]

Family of woman, 77, dragged from car seek apology

By Randy McIlwain, NBCdfw.com

The family of a 77-year-old woman dragged from her car during a traffic stop by police in Texas says a formal apology and anger-management training for the officer is needed to make things right, NBCDFW.com reported.

Lynn Bedford's videotaped arrest has gone viral, sparking opinions across the country. The video shows Sgt. Gene Geheb pulling Bedford, of Cleburne, from her sports utility vehicle after she did not hand over her license and refused to get out of the vehicle.

Her granddaughter, Aubrey McQue, sought the video from Keene police and made it public.

"There was 19 seconds from when he first initially asked her for her driver's license to when he laid his hands on her -- 19 seconds," she said.

The video shows that the officer requested Bedford's license four times before telling her that he would take her to jail if she did not give it to him.

Read more from NBCDFW.com

After Bedford told him, "Well, go ahead," he opened her car door, grabbed her arm and asked her to step out of the vehicle 10 times. He pulled her from the vehicle after she said, "I will not."

McQue said the officer's use of force was excessive.

"The video does speak for itself," she said. "Not once did she refuse to give her driver's license to him. She said, 'I'll give it to you in a minute,' and no patience was afforded to her. He controlled the entire situation, and he made it go in the direction it did. He let it escalate; he controlled that."

The officer said he stopped Bedford after he clocked her going 66 mph in a 50-mph zone. The family is not disputing the speeding citation but is fighting the charge of failure to present a driver's license.

McQue said her grandmother was speeding because she had a bladder infection and needed to get to a bathroom. The road her grandmother was on did not have a public bathroom in sight, she said.

Cop drags woman, 77, from car after ID refusal

McQue said manners and common sense on the part of the officer would have resulted in a different outcome.

"I know from experience from senior citizens and elderly people that they don't have to move faster," she said. "They take a more leisurely pace to do things, and that's the respect afforded them because they've lived so long."

Keene city administrator Bill Guinn, who has known the family for 30 years, said he called after hearing about the incident and offered to arrange a sit-down meeting with the police department.

The Bedfords have declined. The family retained an attorney but said they don't plan a lawsuit at this time.

"I feel badly for what happened, but that's the way it happened," Guinn said. "It's not the way we want anyone to feel about Keene or to see Keene. Keene is a great town, but there are these things that happen."

Sleepless and tearful
Bedford's family said this has never happened to her before. Since the video became public, her home phone constantly rings, and she hasn't slept. The family said Bedford is embarrassed, feeling like her life has been reduced to a video and Internet opinion polls about her as a person.

McQue said she was speaking on Bedford's behalf because her grandmother can't talk about the incident without crying.

"An apology would be nice, because she really is embarrassed by this -- that people think that she's a criminal. She's not a criminal," she said.

Keene residents said they have noticed that Bedford's arrest is getting national attention.

"I have people call me from Chicago, one from Michigan, so I'm getting phone calls from people wanting to know what's going on in Keene," Dan Roberts said.

He said that everyone in town has their own opinion.

"I watched the video, and I think she was wrong," Roberts said. "She should've handed over her driver's license and ID, and it would've been all over."

But Rachel Jessup disagreed.

"More are siding with her because she's a 77-year-old lady," she said. "People feel bad for her."

"He's a cop," she said. "You expect police officers to be rational and handle situations in a more mature way."

TEN SECRETS???? | letusallwin1

TEN SECRETS????

Hi:

?
* The First Secret: The power of Love.

Love begins with our thoughts. We become what we think. Loving thoughts create loving experiences and loving relationships. Affirmations can change our beliefs and thoughts about ourselves and others. If we want to love someone, we need to consider their needs and desires. Thinking about your ideal partner will help recognize him or her when you meet.

* The Second Secret: The power of Respect.

You cannot love anyone or anything unless you first respect them. The first person you need to respect is yourself. To begin to gain self-respect ask yourself, ?What do I respect about myself? ? To gain respect for others, even those you may dislike, ask yourself, ?What do I respect about them??

* The Third Secret: The power of Giving.

If you want to receive love, all you have to do is give it! The more love you give, the more you will receive. To love is to give of yourself, freely and unconditionally. Practice random acts of kindness. The secret formula of a happy, lifelong relationship is to always focus on what you can give instead of you can take.

* The Fourth Secret: The power of Friendship.

To find true love you must first find a true friend. To love someone completely you must love them for who they are not what they look like. Friendship is the soil through which love?s seeds grow. If you want to bring love into a relationship, you must first bring friendship.

* The Fifth Secret: The power of Touch.

Touch is one of the most powerful expressions of love, breaking down barriers and bonding relationships. Touch changes our physical and emotional states and makes us more receptive to love.

* The Sixth Secret: The power of Letting go.

If you love something, let it be free. Even in a loving relationship, people need their space. If we want to learn to love, we must first learn to forgive and let go of past hurts and grievances. Love means letting go of our fears, prejudices, egos and conditions.

* The Seventh Secret: The power of Communication
. .
To love someone is to communicate with them. Let the people you love know; that you love and appreciate them. Never be afraid to say, ?I love you.? Never let an opportunity pass to praise and acknowledge someone. Always leave someone you love with a loving word ? it could be the last time you see them.

* The Eighth Secret: The power of Commitment.
If you want to have love in abundance, you must be committed to it. Commitment is the true test of love. If you want to have loving relationships, you must be committed to loving relationships. When you are committed to someone or something, quitting is never an option. Commitment distinguishes a fragile relationship from a strong, loving one.

* The Ninth Secret: The power of Passion.

Passion ignites love and keeps it alive. Lasting passion does not come through physical attraction alone. It comes from deep commitment, enthusiasm, interest and excitement. The essence of love and happiness are the same, all we need to do is to live each day with passion.

* The Tenth Secret: The power of Trust.
You cannot love someone completely unless you trust them completely. Act as if your relationship with the person you love will never end. Trust is essential in all loving relationships. Trust yourself, trust others and trust the world. It is the foundation for LOVE.
