Obesity, Diabetes Pose 1-2 Threat to Young Americans (HealthDay)

FRIDAY, Dec. 30 (HealthDay News) -- Doctors have long been concerned that increasing rates of childhood obesity could fuel a diabetes epidemic.

Study results have now underscored that fear.

Researchers have found that the length of time a person carries excess weight directly contributes to an increased risk for type 2 diabetes.

In other words, because today's children are expected to receive a larger lifetime "dose" of obesity, their chances of developing diabetes at some point in their lives will be greater.

Dr. John E. Anderson, vice president of medicine and science for the American Diabetes Association, said that the findings reflect what is already happening in society, with more young children and teenagers diagnosed with type 2 diabetes than ever before.

"A disease that used to be confined to older people is creeping into high schools," Anderson said. "At best, this is alarming. This obesity epidemic we have is fueling an epidemic of diabetes in young people."

Obesity among children and adolescents has almost tripled since 1980, according to the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. Today, nearly one in five American kids ages 2 to 19 -- or about 12.5 million -- are obese.

Obesity has long been linked with the development of type 2 diabetes, which occurs when the body gradually loses its ability to properly use insulin to convert blood sugar into fuel, a condition known as insulin resistance.

"Extra weight gets in the way of the ability of tissues to absorb insulin and use it to convert glucose," Anderson said. "The more obese you are, the more insulin resistant you can become."

But researchers now are finding that the time spent carrying extra weight matters as much as the amount of extra weight itself.

A research team at the University of Michigan that studied the health records of about 8,000 teens and young adults found that those with a body mass index (BMI) indicating overweight or obesity for a greater length of time had a higher risk for diabetes.

For example, the researchers found that a person who carried a BMI of 35 for 10 years -- a BMI of 30 or above is considered obese -- could be considered to have the equivalent of 100 years of excess BMI.

The findings, published in the Archives of Pediatrics & Adolescent Medicine, jibe with projections that show diabetes rates exploding as more people spend more of their lives either overweight or obese.

"If you're born in the year 2000 and the current trends continue unchecked, you will have a one in three chance of developing type 2 diabetes," Anderson said. That risk increases for certain ethnic minorities, including African Americans, Native Americans and Hispanics.

Diabetes is a systemic disease, and by its nature can affect almost every part of a person's body. Someone with diabetes has a shorter life expectancy, and on any given day has twice the risk for dying as a person of similar age without diabetes, according to the CDC.

"We worry this will be the first generation of Americans who don't live as long as their parents did," Anderson said.

What can be done to alter the potentially grim outlook? To start losing weight, kids need to adopt a set of healthy living skills that become part of their daily routine, said Sheri Colberg-Ochs, an exercise science professor at Old Dominion University in Norfolk, Va., who works with the American Diabetes Association.

"It's not just the weight, per se," Colberg-Ochs said. "It's the lifestyle they've developed that caused them to gain the extra weight."

First, kids need to be taught to eat healthy foods and to avoid foods that are fatty, sugar-packed or heavily processed, she said.

"When food is a lot more refined, it's lacking in a lot of vitamins and minerals that are essential to your effective metabolic function," she said. "Kids eat empty calories, and those calories go straight to weight gain."

But they also need to become more physically active, she said. Exercise has been shown to both battle obesity and help better control blood glucose levels in the body.

"Those two things alone would probably solve the problem of childhood obesity, were society to pursue them vigorously," Colberg-Ochs said.

North Korea vows no softening despite new leader (AP)

PYONGYANG, North Korea ? North Korea warned the world Friday there would be no softening of its position toward South Korea's government after Kim Jong Il's death as Pyongyang strengthened his son and heir's authority with a new title: Great Leader.

North Korea's powerful National Defense Commission said that the country would never deal with South Korean President Lee Myung-bak, a conservative who stopped a no-strings-attached aid policy toward the North in 2008.

The stern message also said North Korea was uniting around Kim Jong Un, referring to him for the first time with the title Great Leader ? previously used for his father ? in a clear message of continuity. It was the latest incremental step in a burgeoning personality cult around the son following the Dec. 17 death of Kim Jong Il.

The younger Kim on Thursday was pronounced Supreme Leader of the ruling party, military and people at a massive public gathering on the final day of official mourning for his father.

The top levels of government appear to have rallied around Kim Jong Un, who is in his late 20s, in the wake of his father's death. Still, given his inexperience and age, there are questions outside North Korea about his leadership of a nation engaged in delicate negotiations over its nuclear program and grappling with decades of economic hardship and chronic food shortages.

"We declare solemnly and confidently that the foolish politicians around the world, including the puppet group in South Korea, should not expect any change from us," the National Defense Commission said. "We will never deal with the traitor group of Lee Myung-bak."

In a bellicose voice, a female news anchor for state TV read the National Defense Commission statement, saying the "evil misdeeds" of the Lee administration reached a peak when it prevented South Koreans from visiting North Korea to pay respects to Kim Jong Il, except for two delegations led by a former first lady and a business leader, both of whose husbands had ties to North Korea.

North Korea had said foreign official delegations would not be allowed at the funeral but that it would welcome any South Koreans who wanted to travel to pay respects to Kim.

"Even though we lost Kim Jong Il, we have the dear respected Kim Jong Un," Kang Chol Bok, a 28-year-old officer of the Korean People's Internal Security Forces, told The Associated Press. "We will turn our profound sorrow into strength and courage."

The North's statement is a warning for Seoul not to take the new leadership lightly, said Koh Yu-hwan, a North Korea expert at Seoul's Dongguk University.

"It is also raising the stakes in case the South wants better relations so Pyongyang can extract greater concessions" during any later talks, Koh said. He added that it's "too early to say the North is dashing hopes for reforms."

While blasting the South's leader, the North also offered a bit of hope for improved ties with the South, saying it "will continue to push hard toward the path of improved relations."

But it added that any better ties won't be "based on the deceitful ploys South Korea is employing by mixing 'toughness' and 'flexibility.'" Seoul has signaled a change in its approach toward Pyongyang in recent months, saying it will be more flexible in dealing with the North.

South Korea's Unification Ministry will maintain its North Korea policy and not react to every statement out of Pyongyang, according to a ministry official who declined to be identified citing the sensitivity of the relations between the countries.

On Thursday, a somber Kim Jong Un stood with his head bowed at the Grand People's Study House, overlooking Kim Il Sung Square, named for his grandfather, who founded modern North Korea. A huge crowd of mourners gathered below.

Kim Jong Un was flanked by top party and military officials, including Kim Jong Il's younger sister, Kim Kyong Hui, and her husband, Jang Song Thaek, who are expected to serve as mentors of their young nephew.

"The father's plan is being implemented," Ralph Cossa, president of Pacific Forum CSIS, a Hawaii-based think tank, said of the transfer of power. "All of these guys have a vested interest in the system and a vested interest in demonstrating stability. The last thing they want to do is create havoc."

Titles are important in North Korea and part of the myth-building surrounding the Kim family legacy.

Kim Il Sung, the country's first and only president, retains the title Eternal President even after his death.

Kim Jong Il held three main positions: chairman of the National Defense Commission, general secretary of the Workers' Party and supreme commander of the Korean People's Army. According to the constitution, his position as chairman of the National Defense Commission made him Supreme Leader of North Korea.

Kim Jong Un was made a four-star general last year and appointed a vice chairman of the Central Military Commission of the Workers' Party. Since his father's death, North Korean officials and state media have given him a series of new titles: Great Successor, Supreme Leader and now Great Leader.

The mystery woman has been identified.

According to New York Post sources, the blonde on Jim Carrey's arm over the last few weeks is named Anastasia Vitkina. She's a Russian student in New York and insiders confirm she and the 49-year old actor are quite "hot and heavy" these days.

Jim Carrey and Anastasia Vitkina

Injuries giving Florida Panthers a new look

The Toronto Maple Leafs might want to download the Panthers roster before Tuesday?s game at BankAtlantic Center. The Leafs also should forget watching film of the previous meeting between the two in November.

Because of all the injuries, the Panthers hardly resemble the team they were just last week much less right after Halloween.

Center Stephen Weiss (upper-body injury) became the seventh Florida forward to go on the injured list. Weiss, who missed Friday?s game at Boston, practiced on his own Monday and is questionable for Tuesday?s game against his hometown Leafs.

?He?s a maybe,?? coach Kevin Dineen said. ?He got a good skate in, and his heart is pretty big.

?We?ll make the final decision for him, but he wants to get out there.??

If Weiss returns, he likely will be reunited with linemates Tomas Fleischmann and Kris Versteeg. If not, Dineen could split the remaining wingers as he did at Monday?s evening practice in Coral Springs.

On Monday, Florida?s top line was Fleischmann with center Shawn Matthias and winger Matt Bradley (57 goals in 654 career games). Versteeg was on a second line pairing with center Mike Santorelli and Tomas Kopecky.

With center Mark Cullen on re-entry waivers and missing practice, defenseman Erik Gudbranson was put back on the fourth forward line working with Evgenii Dadonov and Bill Thomas.

Cullen likely will be in the lineup Tuesday, thereby replacing Dadonov at center and moving Gudbranson back to the blue line.

?I played [forward] a little as a kid and I enjoyed it. I?ve always considered myself an offensive guy,?? Gudbranson said. ?It was fun getting in front of the net, getting into the corners.??

?We need guys to step up, and that means everyone including myself or Michal Repik or Dadonov,?? said Versteeg, who went into the Christmas break leading the Panthers in goals (16) and points (37). ?We should always pride ourselves enough to win no matter who is out there. We haven?t had a full lineup all year, so we?re not going to make excuses now.??

Dineen has yet to use the Panthers? mounting injuries as an excuse either through the media or in meetings with his team. Six years as an AHL coach seasoned him to expect injuries and to deal with being short-handed.

In Florida?s 5-1 win in Toronto on Nov. 8, three of the injured forwards (Jack Skille, Sean Bergenheim and Marco Sturm) scored.

?We are a long way from where we were a month ago, and that?s fine,?? Dineen said. ?You have transitions during a season. We were stable with the lines, and now we shook them up. We may shake them up again [Tuesday] night.??

One thing working in the Panthers? favor in the coming weeks is their schedule. After running through the first three months like a whirling dervish, the Panthers get to slow things down. Florida plays three games before New Year?s Day and five in the next 11 days. After that stretch, the Panthers play just three games in 10 days.

The easier schedule is definitely welcomed.

?I?d rather get the injuries out of the way so we?re healthy down the stretch,?? defenseman Ed Jovanovski said. ?We only have 12 or 13 games before the All-Star break. Getting through this, you?ll see guys filter back into the lineup. We just have to take care of our home ice.??

Around the ice

??The Panthers definitely noticed prospect Jonathan Huberdeau?s game in Canada?s 8-1 win over Finland in the opener of the World Junior Hockey Championships. Huberdeau, who led the Panthers with three goals during the preseason, had a goal and four assists in the win.

?Yeah, they played real well,?? said Gudbranson, who would have been playing for Team Canada if he wasn?t with the Panthers. ?Huberdeau really ripped it up.??

Great thread.

Phil Lane with 3 goals in 3 games. Great start. We need players with his size and if he can bring a legitimate scoring touch then even better.

Gormley played his first game tonight and played real well. Had a goal and an assist along with numerous solid defensive plays. He played with an edge I haven't seen him play with often but that lead to a few penalties. It's still great to see him hungry like that though.

Tonmorrow afternoon he'll play vs. Domingue.

Domingue over Gormley - at least on the scoreboard.

Judging by the boxscore, Gormley might well have hadt he better game.

Team Captain Jordan Schwarz is really having a good start for Saginaw.

6 gp 3g 4a and a ridiculous team leading +6

http://www.ontariohockeyleague.com/a...ern-conference

Saturday's win against the Greyhounds started with a pair of early goals by Saginaw's top line of Ivan Telegin along with captain Jordan Szwarz and Michael Sgarbossa.

?It was good to get a good start,? Szwarz said. ?It?s always good to get a goal in the first shift to get your team going.

Playing again tonite.

Gormley was held scoreless in a 6-2 loss but somehow ended up with a +2 on the night.

Domingue was credited with the win tonight and he played a total of... 0 min.

He replaced the starting goaltender for the shootout and Quebec won so he got the win.

Moncton's starting tender had a tough night -5 shots 5 goals before he got the hook.

I wonder if that's a misprint?

It is.

Saint John had a total of 33 shots but when you look at the goalies stats there are only 11 shots.

Gormley played great again last night. Had a goal and he also had the winning goal in the shootout on a nice move to roof it.

Maloney told me the guy has Yandle upside. That's how highly they think of him. These where Yandle's stats in his draft year. Keep in mind he got drafted the year after his eligibility.

2005-2006 Moncton Wildcats-QMJHL 66 25 59 84 50 109 15 0 3

Those are some big numbers, a ppg and I would be very happy.

3G 7A +3 for Gorms through 5 games.

Really making it look easy out there!

Also seems to be playing with an edge, something we haven't really seen of him before.

I was just gonna ask if anyone knows what happened to him. He hasn't been playing and one of the team writeups refers to the back up "filling in" for Visentin.

Anybody know if he's hurt or what the deal is?

I read something about a groin pull. He could be ok for the weekend but the second goaltender is doing good so they can be patient with Visentin.

I see Blair Riley is on the roster in the drop down menu on the LV site.

Kinda strange how the PR mentions Fallon, Long and Ross were reassigned but Ross and Long are not in the roster presented in the PR.

Is there something wrong with Brown?

He's only got 1 assist and 0 goals through 5 games.

I was hopeful that this was going to be a breakout year for him.
